NAFP Meeting Minutes: April 15th, 2010

Meeting held at BCG Solutions, Omaha. 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

Jill Kuzo welcomed the members who attended the meeting in April 15th.

A brief introduction of NAFP members who attended the meeting was given.

Jill Kuzo updated the new members who attended the meeting about the first meeting held in UNL and the election of the Board of Directors (selected during the first meeting).

                Anna Jesus discussed NAFP representation at the Nebraska Future Farmers of America (FFA) annual meeting. The possibility of inviting high school students to join the NAFP group was discussed.

Information was given about some webinars  (one already presented  about the New Legislations for Food Safety) that are coming up during the next months. The information will be provided to all of the members when the webinars are scheduled.  Time and topics for some of the webinars are:

·         Food hygiene Webinar (already sent, it has a cost)

·         May (Need to be confirmed)

·         June (Need to be confirmed)

 

NAFP members voted for the Constitution of the NAFP sent on April 16th. The majority of the members approved it.

The Mission of the NAFP was read by Jill Kuzo and members agreed with it

Marsha Wilderdyke volunteered and was elected by the NAFP members to be in charge of the NAFP web page design. In the web page all the information about NAFP will be found (list of members, events coming up, meetings, etc.).

A Proposed Conference Agenda for the NAFP Annual Meeting was discussed among the members, the following points were covered:

·         October was the tentative date for the Annual Meeting, however, during that discussion Tracy Kurkosky pointed out that October is the harvesting period making difficult the presence of many food processors.

·         Tentative date  (Proposed to be in November)

·         Preferably not on Saturday.

·         Not during Nebraska home game.

·         The Annual Meeting will have a cost.

·         Lori will help to coordinate the Annual Meeting by the Food Processing Center.

·         Also, topics that can be presented in the Annual Meeting were discussed. Dr. Bullerman (from Food Science, UNL) was mentioned to be part of a discussion panel about mycotoxins.

·         It was mentioned that people from FDA could be present in the Annual Meeting.

·         The Annual Meeting will be coordinating by Lori (UNL).

 

A group of members was set; this group will help to find the possible topics which can be included in the Annual Meeting. The members are:

·         Lori Byrne (UNL)

·         Anna Jesus (ConagraFoods)

·         Marsha Wilderidyke

·         Tracy Kurkoski

·         Jim Tischer (Cargill)

 

 

The next meeting will be held at Cargill on May 13th  2010. Jim Tischer volunteered to host the meeting.

Finally, at the end of the meeting, a technology to eliminate pathogens (Ozone) was showed by people from the host company, BCG Solutions. It was an interactive discussion between the members and people who are familiar with the technology.
